SARASOTA, FL. – December 1, 2016   – 8 a.m.

Amanda L. Dean, 34, and Joseph P. Dromeshauser, III, 34, of 1315 18th Street, Sarasota, have been charged with five (5) counts each of child neglect without great bodily harm.  Dromeshauser has also been charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

On Monday, November 28, 2016, Sarasota Police Officers responded to 1315 18th Street in reference to a welfare check.  When Officers arrived on scene, they located five children: 17 year old male, 12 year old male, 10 year old male, 2 year old male and 11 month old female.  During a walkthrough of the home, Officers determined the home was not suitable to live in.

Officers observed broken glass scattered throughout the home, animal and human feces on the floor and multiple prescription pill containers left open within reach of children.  Officers also found trash, clothes, rotting food and a strong order of urine throughout the home. While speaking with Dromeshauser, Officers noticed countertops and sinks were filled with dishes, old rotting food, trash and bottles filled with urine.  Inside one of the bedrooms, Officers found a burnt brillo and a pipe used to smoke crack cocaine in plain view near additional empty pill bottles.

In addition to observations of the home, Officers learned from Dromeshauser that the home had no running water or means of disposal for human waste.  Dromeshauser told Officers the family commuted to a family member’s home once a week to shower the children and wash clothes.

“The conditions in this home were the worst I’ve ever seen,” said Detective Megan Buck, Criminal Investigations Division.  “No child or adult should have to live in conditions like this.  Someone knew something wasn’t right with this family and called law enforcement.  I’m thankful they did,” said Detective Buck.

Sarasota Police Officers contacted Department of Children and Families to conduct an investigation.  The children were removed from the home.  After approximately one hour on scene, Officers located Dean hiding in a closet.  She told Officers she was afraid to go to jail.

Dromeshauser and Dean are being held at the Sarasota County Jail.

SARASOTA, Fla. -- December 2, 2016 -- 8 a.m.

On Thursday, December 8, 2016 from 8:30 a.m. until 10 a.m., Officers from the Sarasota Police Department and community members will come together in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, build relationships and drink coffee.  The Coffee with a Cop event will be held at the 12th Street Café, 1100 North Tuttle Avenue, Unit 1, Sarasota.  Members of the public and media are invited to attend.

Coffee with a Cop provides a unique opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about the Sarasota Police Department’s work in the City of Sarasota’s neighborhoods.

The majority of contacts law enforcement has with the public happen during emergencies or emotional situations.  Those situations are not always the most effective times for relationship building with the community and some community members may feel that Officers are unapproachable on the street.  Coffee with a Cop breaks down barriers and allows for a relaxed, one-on-one interaction.

“We hope that community members will feel comfortable to ask questions, bring concerns, or simply get to know our Officers,” said Chief Bernadette DiPino. “These interactions are the foundation of community partnerships.”

Coffee with a Cop is a national initiative supported by The United States Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. Similar events are being held across the county, as local police departments strive to make lasting connections with the communities they serve.

The program aims to advance the practice of community policing through improving relationships between police officers and community members one cup of coffee at a time.  The Sarasota Police Department began holding Coffee with a Cop events in February 2014.

SARASOTA, FL. – December 28, 2016   – 10:30 a.m.

The Sarasota Police Department has received a grant for a High Visibility Enforcement program for pedestrian and bicycle safety.  The safety campaign, which will begin the first week of January 2017, is in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation and the University of South Florida’s Center for Urban Transportation Research.

Officers will observe, educate and enforce traffic laws in the five chosen areas in an attempt to reduce the number of pedestrian, bicycle and motor vehicle crashes.  Officers will also be working to educate citizens about the importance of traffic laws.

The goal of the safety campaign is geared to increase awareness of pedestrian, bicycle and motor vehicle safety through education and enforcement.  The grant, provided by FDOT and USF, will allow officers to be present at five (5) key corridors in the City of Sarasota.

The intersections in the City of Sarasota that were chosen were selected based on crash data involving both pedestrians, bicyclists and motor vehicles.  The intersections were also chosen for their volume of pedestrian traffic and number of accidents involving both vehicles and pedestrians or bicyclists:

·       North Washington corridor (SR 683 1000 Block to 2700 Block)

·       North Tamiami Trail Corridor (SR 45 – Mound Street to University Parkway)

·       South Tamiami Trail Corridor (SR 45 Mound Street to Hyde Park Street)

·       North Washington Corridor (SR 683 300 Block to 1000 Block)

·       Downtown Corridor (Main Street 100 Block to 2000 Block)

“The safety of our community is our number one priority.  We want every driver, pedestrian and bicyclist to know and understand the rules of the road,” said Sergeant Bruce King, Sarasota Police Department Traffic Unit.  “Safety doesn’t happen by accident.”

All contacts with citizens will be documented and results will be sent to the Florida Department of Transportation for evaluation at the conclusion of the safety campaign.

SARASOTA, FL. – December 29, 2016   – 8 a.m.

The men and women of the Sarasota Police Department are working to make sure our community can enjoy a safe start to the New Year.  To make sure our community stays safe, Officers are encouraging people to avoid driving while intoxicated and refrain from discharging weapons in the air as a way of celebrating the arrival of 2017.

The annual Pineapple Drop will be held again in downtown Sarasota at Lemon Avenue and Main Street.  The Sarasota Police Department is asking those planning to celebrate to please leave backpacks, coolers and alcohol at home.

Some individuals have celebrated the arrival of the New Year by firing a weapon into the air.  This is known as celebratory gunfire and is dangerous and illegal.  “What goes up, must come down.”  A bullet fired into the air is going to come down and the unintended consequences can be tragic.

It is against the law to fire a weapon in the City of Sarasota; Violators can expect to be arrested.  Please see our Public Service Announcement asking visitors and residents to refrain from celebratory gunfire at http://youtu.be/9MaODNzokxo

If part of your holiday celebrations include consuming alcoholic beverages, plan ahead by not driving while impaired.  There are safer and less expensive ways of travel:  Use a designated driver, take a taxi or take advantage of the free ‘Tow to Go’ service offered through AAA.  Tow to Go will be offered until 6 a.m. on January 2, 2017.

For Tow to Go in Sarasota, you can call 1-855-2-TOW-2-GO (1-855-286-9246)  The Sarasota Police Department will be out on New Year’s Eve and there will be no tolerance for the dangerous act of drinking and driving.

Several roads will be closed for the annual Pineapple Drop on Saturday, December 31, 2016.  Vehicles not removed by the posted time will be towed at the owner’s expense.  For information on towed vehicles, please call Upman’s Towing at 941-365-7084.

SARASOTA, FL. – February 3, 2017   – 8 a.m.

A team of assessors from the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA) will arrive March 7, 2017, to examine all aspects of the Sarasota Police Department’s policies and procedures, management, operations and support services.  The Sarasota Police Department has to comply with approximately 260 standards in order to receive accredited status.  Many of the standards are critical to life, health and safety issues.

As part of the on-site assessment, agency members and the general public are invited to offer comments to the assessment team.  A copy of the standards is available online at http://www.flaccreditation.org/standards.htm under the 5.02 version.  For more information regarding CFA or for persons wishing to offer written comments about the Sarasota Police Department’s ability to meet the standards of accreditation, please write: CFA, P.O. Box 1489, Tallahassee, Florida32302, or email to info@flaccreditation.org.

The Accreditation Manager for the Sarasota Police Department is Cheryl Houpt.  Ms. Houpt stated the assessment team is composed of law enforcement practitioners from similar agencies.  The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals and visit offices and other places where compliance can be witnessed.

Once the Commission’s assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full Commission which will then decide if the agency is to receive accredited status.  The Sarasota Police Department’s accreditation is for three years.  “Verification by the team that the Sarasota Police Department meets the Commission’s standards is part of a voluntary process to gain or maintain accreditation.  This is a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence,” said Chief Bernadette DiPino.
