SARASOTA, FL. – May 23, 2016 – 8 a.m.
The Sarasota Police Department is joining law enforcement agencies from around the state of Florida and around the country to step up ‘Click It or Ticket’ activities. Research shows that lap/shoulder belts, when used, reduce the risk of fatal injuries to front-seat passengers by 45% and the risk of moderate-to-critical injuries by 50%, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"We want more people wearing their seat belts. Statistics show that seat belts save lives," said Sarasota Police Traffic Officer Tim Bales. "There are too many people dying on the road and many of those deaths could have been prevented if people took the time to buckle up. We will continue to give citations year-round to those people who still haven’t gotten the message," said Officer Bales.
May 23, 2016 through June 5, 2016, Officers will increase patrols to look for impaired or intoxicated drivers, seat belt and child restraint violators, aggressive drivers, speeding violations, texting violations and every day traffic violations.
In an effort to remind drivers and passengers to buckle up year round, the Sarasota Police Department also created a Public Service Announcement which can be viewed on our YouTube page at http://youtu.be/3piuZh6I7mc
